The Home Office issues letters and documents confirming an individual's immigration status in the United Kingdom - including indefinite leave to remain confirmations, settled status letters, refugee status documents, and various other immigration-related correspondence. When these need to be presented to a foreign authority, they must be apostilled.
What the FCDO requires
A Home Office document bearing a wet-ink signature or a wet-ink or embossed seal with a date from the issuing authority can be submitted directly to the FCDO for apostille. No solicitor or Notary Public certification is required in that case. The FCDO authenticates the wet-ink signature, seal or stamp on the document - confirming to overseas authorities that the signature or seal is genuine. The apostille is a physical paper certificate attached to the back of the original.
Electronic or unsigned Home Office documents
Where a Home Office document has been issued electronically or does not carry a wet-ink signature or seal - even if it is the original - it must first be certified by a UK solicitor or Notary Public before the FCDO will accept it. The solicitor examines the document, certifies it as genuine, and applies their own wet-ink signature and official stamp. The FCDO then authenticates the solicitor's certification.
Common situations requiring a legalised Home Office document
Overseas immigration authorities may request an apostilled Home Office letter as part of a residency application in another country; foreign embassies may require it for visa processing; employers abroad may need it as part of right-to-work verification; and legal proceedings in a foreign jurisdiction may require authenticated evidence of UK immigration status.
e-Apostille
Where the solicitor's certification carries a verifiable digital signature, the e-Apostille service may be available for faster processing. For documents submitted directly with the Home Office's own wet-ink marks, the paper apostille route applies. For countries outside the Hague Convention, embassy attestation is required after the apostille.
