What It Means in Practice

When a document is notarised, the notary’s role is to:

1. Verify identity of the person signing (usually by checking a passport or ID).

2. Witness the signing — or, in some cases, confirm that the signature was made previously but genuinely by that person.

3. Add a notarial certificate — a statement explaining what the notary did (e.g., “Signed before me on this date”).

4. Apply their official seal/stamp and signature.

• SIgn the document in the UK
• Use their personal signature, not a company signature

• Include their seal (if applicable), if an embossed seal is used, the embossment must go through the document and be present on both sides of the page.
• Include the date of certification
• State the action they have taken eg witnessed, certified a copy, confirmed as original
