It includes key details about both spouses and the marriage, and is usually issued by the General Register Office (GRO), a local register office, National Records of Scotland (NRS), General Register Office Northern Ireland (GRONI), or the Overseas Registration Unit in the UK.

Can it be legalised?: Yes, a UK marriage certificate is eligible for FCDO legalisation.
Accepted formats for legalisation: The FCDO can accept the original certificate or a certified copy issued by the GRO, a local register office, NRS, GRONI, or the Overseas Registration Unit in the UK. Certain original certificates issued on official watermarked paper may also be accepted if they contain an original signature from an authorised person.
Does it require solicitor or notary certification?: No, solicitor or notary certification is usually not required if the document is an original or an officially certified copy. The certificate must include a wet ink signature or official seal from the issuing authority.
Does the original need to be submitted?: Yes. The original certificate or an officially certified copy must be submitted for legalisation.
Important notes: Photocopies and draft certificates cannot be legalised. For next-day processing, the correct original or certified copy must be provided.

Is embassy attestation required?: Embassy attestation may be required if the document is intended for use in a country that is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention, such as the UAE or Qatar.
